  • Youth Project – Alternative to School

Currently, our most major project is our effort to build and be an alternative to school for young people. We believe, with a lot of evidence to back up our belief, that mainstream schools and most alternative schools are not following the best principles of education and that we are on the cusp of dramatic changes in education due to a growing movement pushing for truly self-directed education.

potential activities

The possibilities for what kinds of activities, services, and events we host and engage in are endless. What we end up doing will depend on who shows up to join the community and what their interests and abilities are. But here are some ideas worth considering.

  1. Fun and Socialization Including fun and relaxing activities like park days, hanging out, dinner parties, potlucks, and barbecues, games, sing-alongs, dancing, going to concerts, movies, and outings, such as going on hikes and camping.
  2. Enrichment and Exploration Including intentionally seeking the novel and thought- or emotion-provoking. Traveling, seeing theatrical performances, attending conferences, exploring sub-cultures, watching out for the unexpected…
  3. Creativity and Expression Including intentionally giving each other opportunities for creating and expressing and sharing what comes from ourselves, personally. Building things, arts, crafts, publishing, recording, talent shows, exhibitions, holding concerts, giving seminars, lectures, and demonstrations, holding public conversations and debates, sales and business development, etc.
  4. Learning and Applying Knowledge Including intentionally seeking some of the best and most powerful knowledge, insight, and wisdom that exists out in the world and inside of us. Sharing knowledge, skills, and hobbies; workshops, book clubs, meditation groups, retreats, attending and hosting conferences, watching documentaries, etc.
  5. Neighborhood and Community Familiarization Exploring our neighborhoods, communities, and cities to become more familiar, making friends and widening our sense of family. This is to be more aware of our surroundings both physical and social, to better understand how our world works, locally, what resources are available, and what problems exist around us. With this knowledge, we have more opportunities for more fun, connections, and problem-solving.
  6. Neighborhood and Community Investigation When we become familiar with local problems, we can start to get more organized and methodical about investigating the problems more deeply. This could even sometimes include investigative journalism.
  7. Engaging in Big Projects The big projects can be personal, within a sub-group of the community, or community-wide. There could be sub-groups based on certain themes, or even businesses created to solve certain problems and take advantage of certain opportunities. One major possibility includes creating a company for community safety and security, inspired by the work and philosophy of Dale Brown.
  8. Charity and Service There are many people in this world who could use some help, some of whom may never be able to give much, materially, to others. We believe, for their sake and ours, it is worthwhile to help and to build a culture where we look out for everyone. Even internally to our community, we may find fortunes turn and someone needs help. We may be able to revive the tradition of mutual aid societies.
  9. Support Groups Beyond the support that comes from building relationships and friendships, some people may want to form intentional support groups to help each other through problems or stresses in their lives. One option is to partner up with someone who has gone through similar issues, or at least has some understanding, and may have some perspective to share.
  10. Community Connection As we build a deeper sense of community, we may want to share together in big life events, both happy and sad, and hold events or rituals to commemorate them. For example, weddings or partnership ceremonies, funerals, rites of passage, etc. We could build our own celebrations based on cultural, seasonal, and metaphorical themes, for instance, occurring on the solstices and equinoxes. And we can bring back some of the mystery and profundity of holidays.
  11. Spiritual Journey By spiritual here we are not referring to specific beliefs, to religion, or to spirits or souls in some supernatural sense; we are referring to the deepest essence, or spirit, of our experience, to our deepest and most profound experiences and values, to the things that mean the most to us, and how we make sense of it all with our personal world views. We may want to develop rituals and traditions for our own spiritual journeys. These could take many forms, including for some the responsible use of psychedelics, which have tragically been demonized by governments. However we each choose to follow our own spiritual path, it is something that we can encourage each other to do by following it ourselves and sharing our experiences and stories.
